The History of Instagram

Written By: Monique Costabile

Instagram the most popular photo-sharing platform on the planet was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger on October 6th, 2010 and was later bought by Facebook in April 2012 (Ahmad 2014). Instagram went from being a platform with only a “handful of users” to “the number one free photography app in just a few hours” (Woods 2013).

“In December 2010, Instagram had over one million users” (Woods 2013). These users included ordinary users to celebrities from across the globe. “Over the course of the next two years the popularity of the service continued to grow and the Instagram team continued to add features, including hashtags, new filters, high resolution photo support and one click rotate, among others” (Woods 2013).

“In August 2011, the 150 millionth photo was uploaded to the service” (Woods 2013). “By the end of September 2011, it had more than 10 million users” (Woods 2013).

Once Instagram launched videos in June 2013 and Direct Message “and with the power of 150 million monthly active users the social network may have established a destiny for itself that will last for many years to come” (Ahmad 2014).
