In-corporating Social Media

The growing world of technology has allowed us the ability to connect, communicate, and share information instantly with everyone at any given time. These developments have altered our society and our social norms. We have seen the ability of information communication technologies (ICT’s) to change nations, societies, people, and their status. These changes and impacts have played a big roll in developing my podcast and writing of this blog.

        As I prepared the pitch for the podcast, I found it difficult

to establish my point of view and decide on a topic concerning ICT’s, due to the abundant amount of information concerning them. The very tool, the Internet, which I was using to gain information about ICT’s showed how these technologies impact our daily routines. With such vast amount of knowledge available to use it is easy to get lost in. I used Google Scholar and York University’s library database to access articles to see what scholars were saying about ICT’s, to better narrow my topic. I spoke with friends and classmate about their opinion of ICT’s and how they affect their daily lives. The feedback I received from peers and the information gathered from articles confirmed what I noticed, ICT’s are altering the way society operates, such as the different ways we communicate. For example texting, podcasting, and blogging has changed our language. We now write in haste, modifying our written structure, for instance, ‘laughing out loud’ is now represented by ‘LOL’. The way we research has also been impacted by ICT’s with powerful information available to us quicker and more abundant than before, researching is now easier. We can find information about anything at anytime. We can research complex information such as, the distance between space stations or the information they gather, and as simplistic as how to make a chocolate cake. We can find information about anything at anytime.

As I researched the ins and outs of the podcast industry, I also came to realize that the medium, social media, which I was using to deliver my message, carries a business driven agenda. The shift to consumerism became clear, as click, after click, I was met with advertisements on every level. Blogs primary use, by businesses, has become a marketing tool for branding, managing reputation, developing customer trust and loyalty, niche marketing, gathering marketing intelligence and promoting their online presence (Chua, Deans, & Parker, 2009). This new era of corporate consumerism assists the capitalist’s endeavors that govern the system. As a relatively new tool in the technological era, social media is proving to be valuable, effective, and powerful for the corporations that set the worlds’ markets.

It has become a tool that enforces censorship when applicable, for example in ‘Research is Challenging!’, on our blog post, Manohari Perera describes the restrictions of using Google Scholar to read through articles and was unable to view the full text unless it was paid for. Accessibility was granted after using York’s Library databases to view the articles, a service that we as students pay into, to gain admission. There frustrating attempts to access information from the open Internet limited them and shows that those with provisions and status are granted access to certain information, in essence it has become a powerful, useful and optimal tool for the corporation. However, the ability to advertise affordably now allows small businesses to reach more customers and increase their profit margins. Allowing small businesses to carve out a place for themselves in the market place.
